May Weather and Diving
May 2024 - 2023 - 2022 - 2021 - 2020 - 2019 - 2018 - 2017 - 2016 - 2015
After an excellent May 2018 and 2019, May 2020 and 2021 were about average, 2022 and 2023 below average and May 2024 average again:
in 2024 we had 9 completely sunny days, 15 partly sunny days and 7 overcast days, all about average.
So all in all it was an okay month, albeit just as the previous months this year warmer than usual. Also the water has stayed quite
warm, causing bleaching at certain sites.
At the moment this still seems reverable, we do need some cooler water to come in though.
The wind was about average this May, with 19 calm days.
In 2011 we were on two days not able to dive in the Shark Point area, in 2012 we could not safely reach Racha Noi on
one day and on one day we were limited in our dive destinations to Racha Yai, in 2013 on one day we could not reach
Racha Noi. In 2014 and 2015 all destinations were possible every day of the month and in 2016 on two days we
cancelled all diving, on four days we were limited to Racha Yai and on one day we could not dive in the
Shark Point area, all at the end of the month. In 2017 we had one day where we could only dive at Racha Yai,
one where we could not go to Racha Noi and one where Racha Noi and the King Cruiser-Shark Point area were not safe.
In 2018 we could dive everywhere on all days, we even managed to get a few nice dives in at Kata Beach,
in 2019 we had just 2 days where we could not dive at the King Cruiser wreck or Shark Point area, and again we managed
to get a few days diving at Kata Beach in. In May 2020 and 2021 no diving was allowed, and while difficult to judge, I
think that in 2020 on 2 days King Cruiser-Shark Point area would have been unsafe. In 2021 all destinations would
have been safe every day, and in both 2020 and 2021 we would have had quite a few days where diving at our housereef
at Kata Beach would have been really nice. In 2022 we could not dive at the housereef in Kata Beach all May, on 4 days
we could not dive in the King Cruiser-Shark Point area, on 3 days only at Racha Noi and Racha Yai and on 1 day we were limited to Racha Yai.
Last year on 6 days we could not safely and comfortably dive in the King Cruiser-Shark Point area.
This year on 5 days we could not safely and comfortably dive in the King Cruiser-Shark Point are and on 2 days only at Racha Noi and Racha Yai.
The whole month there was no diving at Kata Beach.
The Similans and Richelieu Rock national parks are closed, to re-open again on 15 October 2023.
Diving at our housereef in Kata will resume again in November.
