Similans Islands
|
| |
The
Similan Islands are a stunning group of nine islands, north-west of
Phuket.
The diving here is astounding; one of the top spots in the world and
Asia and certainly the best in Thailand. Thriving reefs, lush corals,
impressive sea fans and an incredible variety of marine life including
large pelagics such as manta rays and whale sharks.
The Similans are characterised by gigantic boulders above and below
the water line, creating awesome underwater scenery and exciting swimthroughs
for divers to explore. The water is crystal clear and the visibility while diving
is fantastic. The Similans also have exquisite sandy beaches and shallow
coral reefs in the bays, which are perfect for snorkeling.
|
|
| |
Spread among the nine islands are about 20 different
dive sites.
One of the favourites, especially for photographers, is Fantasea
Reef. Thousands of schooling fusiliers and banner fish together with the always
present sharks make this an awesome dive.
Another top diving site is Christmas Point. This is a good spot for manta rays, nurse
sharks and barracudas. It has an impressive variety of hard and soft corals
and a wonderful maze of swimthroughs.
Shark Fin Reef has beautiful coral and sponge gardens. It is an excellent
site to see reef sharks and huge Napoleon wrasse.
|
|
| |
Elephant Rock looks from the surface like an elephant head. Below the surface
there are many impressive tunnels and swimthroughs. You can find small white
tip reef sharks in a rock crevasse at the start of the dive and lots of colourful
fish.
Boulder City is another favourite dive site of the Similans. Due to its exposed
location it is possible to see almost anything here including whale sharks
and mantas. It is always an exceptional dive. Leopard sharks, spanish dancers
and great barracudas have been seen here against a backdrop of huge granite
boulders.
|
|
| |
To
dive the Similans, you can go on a daytrip or take a liveaboard. You can choose
for diving only the Similans, or add other divesites further north such as Koh
Bon, Koh Tachai, Richelieu Rock and Surin Islands.
|
| |
Koh Bon & Koh Tachai
|
| |
The beautiful islands of Koh Bon and Koh Tachai
are a part of the Surin National Marine Park. Due to their isolated
location these islands offer excellent opportunities to go diving with mantas and
whale sharks.
Koh Bon is a fantastic dive spot, famous for its visiting whale sharks, manta
rays and sharks. There are thousands of schooling fish as well as octopus
and cuttlefish. A myriad of corals, anemones and fascinating sea sponges
makes this exceptional diving, teeming with life.
|
|
| |
Koh Tachai is a series of submerged pinnacles and boulders, which form excellent
swimthroughs. A variety of sea fans, feather stars and anemones makes
this a stunning area to dive. Huge Napoleon wrasse and yellow tail barracudas
are often seen amidst schooling fish such as bannerfish and fusiliers.
To dive Koh Bon and Koh Tachai, you take one of the liveaboards that make
a combination trip to Similans and Surin. Minimum duration of the trip
is 4 days and 4 nights.
|
|
| |
Richelieu Rock & Surin Islands
|
| |
The beautiful Surin Marine National Park is situated
north of Similan. It consists of five granite islands covered in lush
forest with idyllic beaches and beautifully clear water.
The Surin Islands are an excellent place to see many breeds of turtles, as
they come to Koh Chi (one of the islands) to feed and lay their eggs.
This area is perfect for our night dives. As well as turtles we see many
rays, crabs, shrimps and also reef sharks. There are gardens of anemones,
sponges and an impressive variety of corals and giant clams to see. In
the daytime the northern Surin Islands are a top spot for "big fish".
|
|
| |
The famous Richelieu Rock is one of the world's
best locations for spotting whale sharks and is certainly one of Thailand's
best dive sites. This submerged rock is surrounded by a series of underwater
pinnacles, covered in corals and sea fans, making this spectacular
wall diving.
Richelieu Rock is incredibly rich in marine life. Here you can see seahorses,
shovel nose rays, moray eels, lionfish and schools of banner fish. Due
to its location in open seas you may also see barracudas and pelagics such as trevallies and tuna.
|
|
| |
To dive Richelieu Rock and Surin Islands, you take one of the liveaboards
that make a combination trip to Similans and Surin. Minimum duration of
the trip is 4 days and 4 nights.

Hin Daeng
|
| |
Located
in the middle of the ocean this area is known as one of the best dive
sites in the world. Hin Daeng, an underwater limestone pinnacle, rises
few metres above the surface and drops off down to 60 metres. No other
spot in the Andaman Sea has a wall like this. The pinnacle is covered
with colourful soft corals with huge beds of anemones. Schools of barracudas,
big jacks, trevallies and also sailfish abound; while whale sharks,
silvertip sharks, big sting rays and mantas often can be seen. You can
encounter about anything that might decide to show up.
|
|
| |
Hin Muang
|
| |
Hin
Muang is regarded to offer some of Thailand's best diving. It is approximately
200 meters long and 30 meters wide, the top of the pinnacle is in about
10 meters of water. Cuttlefish and lionfish are commonly sighted amongst
the carpet of purple soft corals that gave the site its name.
The vertical drop offs have a large concentration of zig-zag oysters
and schools of silver sides hang around the rocky outcrops. Large quantities
of sea anemones can be found in the shallower depths.
The underwater world here resembles Hin Daeng, and, just as at Hin Daeng, because of the often strong currents and surge this can be a challenging divesite.
|
|
| |
You can make a trip to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang in combination with diving
at Koh Phi Phi (see
our daytrip information).
Minimal duration of a liveaboard is 2 days and 1 night, daytrips to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are also possible.
