August Weather and Diving
August 2019 - 2018 - 2017 - 2016 - 2015 - 2014 - 2013 - 2012 - 2011 - 2010 - 2009
August 2019 was, in contrast to 2018 and 2017, which were about as good as it gets in August with lots of sun and many calm days, not so good: only 8 fully sunny days, the 11 partially sunny days made a bit up for that, and at the end of the month quite a lot of rain. Most of that rain fell in the evening, but also during the day we had some rain. We really need that rain, it has been quite dry so far.
On the days where we had a moderate or strong wind it did affect the diving more than in years previously. All in all we still had 19 days with lots of sun, 8 days with some rain during the day and no really wet days. On 12 days we had very calm weather with just a slight breeze, on 19 days the wind was stronger.
In 2014 on two days we could not dive in the Shark Point area, in 2013 on one day we could only dive at our alternate destination of Coral Island and on another day we could not go to Racha Noi Island. In 2015 on two days we were limited to Coral Island, on four days to Racha Yai and on four days we were not able to dive in the Shark Point area, all in all ten days where we were limited in dive destinations. 2016 was the first year in which thankfully Coral Island was not used as an alternate destination, so on 9 days we were limited to Racha Yai, on 2 days to Racha Noi and Racha Yai and on 4 days we could not safely dive in the Shark Point area, the worst year in living history. In 2017 on 2 days we were limited to Racha Yai, on one day we could only dive Racha Noi and Racha yai and on 2 days we could not dive in the King Cruiser/Shark Point area, and last year on 2 days there was no diving at all, on 6 days we were limited to Racha Yai, and on 3 more days we could not comfortably and safely dive in the King Cruiser-Shark Point area. This year it became again very clear that we take more the comfort and safety of our guests into account than some of the others: we cancelled when others waited till the morning and till other boats cancelled, and on one day the boats turned around while we had already cancelled the morning before.
There were many sightings of blacktip reefsharks at Koh Bida Nok, one of the Phi Phi divesites, and we had a few leopard shark sightings at Racha Noi. We used to see them at quite a few divesites, but right now we're lucky if we get to see one. But with the national park rules at Phi Phi now enforced, so no beginner divers, no discover scuba divers at the sites we dive at, things are really looking on the up, the diving has been really good these last few months. And not just at Phi Phi, also at the Racha Islands and King Cruiser-Shark Point area, where we did some diving vwith really good visibility.
